Is fishing safe?

Fishing is incredibly safe if proper precautions are taken. Here are some easy to remember tips:

  • Keep at least one rod’s length between you and the next angler at all times
  • Stay aware of your surroundings. Always look next to and behind you before casting. Keep your eyes out to avoid hooking a power line, tree, or person.
  • Protect yourself from the elements with sunglasses, sunscreen, and bug spray.
  • Be careful around water, and bring a buddy if you can. Always wear a life jacket \or personal flotation device if you’re on a boat.
What are some unwritten rules of fishing?

Fishing can be intimidating to start - here are some rules of thumb that can help you as you start.

  • Respect the environment. Leave the fishing area cleaner than you found it.
  • Abide by all rules and regulations.
  • Respect the resource and fish. Only keep fish you plan to eat, and in accordance with local regulations.
  • Minimize the amount of time you keep a fish out of water that you intend to release.
  • Don’t fish on anyone’s property without permission.
  • Pass on the tradition and teach someone else to fish!
What do I do if I’ve been fishing for a long time and haven’t caught anything?

If you’ve been fishing in one spot for over thirty minutes without any luck, it might be time to find a new spot. Look for a new place to try to fish - a dock, clearing on the shore, etc. Refer to your booklet for tips on where to look!

Where do I fish?

Believe it or not, there are fish in most bodies of water. Search online for nearby bodies of water. Start with public parks or nature preserves, and check that fishing is allowed. What will I catch?

Cast & Seek products are designed to help you catch freshwater fish. Some common freshwater fish are bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, perch, catfish, etc.

What is a fishing license?

One of the most important items any angler needs to get started? A fishing license. Each state has its own regulations and offers both short and long-term licenses. WHY? You contribute to state conservation programs. Fishery management, habitat protection, and fishing education depend on you!

Do I need a license to fish?
